Most of the fish we target in the waters around Ketchikan, like in most saltwater areas, are migratory. They move from one area to another with the seasons. Some are in the Ketchikan area all year and some only during certain times. This chart will give you an idea of when you can expect each type of fish to be present. The months highlighted in yellow are when there are fishable populations in the area. Those highlighted in read indicate the months when the migratory fish are in the are in the greatest concentration. If the month is highlighted in blue there are few or none of the fish in the area.
This is a guide only. The fish react to water and weather conditions, not a calendar. However, this chart is based on many decades of data, so it is the best planning information available.
If you desire to target a specific type of fish, you should plan your trip during one of the months that are highlighted in red. If the time you will be in Ketchikan is set by plans not specific to fishing, such as being on a cruise, this chart shows what fish you should expect your Captain to recommend that you target. This is important since the techniques, areas, and baits that are best for each type of fish varies. Let us know what you desire and we will plan your trip accordingly.
